In his first-ever screening in Budapest, Selected Works by Scott Barley presents his acclaimed feature alongside three shorts — a mix of his latest and earlier films that have captivated the film community around the globe. Together they mark a beginning, a proposition, but by no means a final destination for what Barley’s work represents in contemporary visual culture.

Sleep Has Her House (2017) - Feature Film

The shadows of screams climb beyond the hills.
It has happened before. But this will be the last time.
The last few sense it, withdrawing deep into the forest.
They cry out into the black, as the shadows pass away, into the ground.

Through long static takes, the film develops a contemplative, hypnotic experience, akin to paintings that move, mixing live action, still photography, and hand-drawn images.

The film is dedicated to the late French filmmaker and friend, Philippe Cote, who passed way in 2016. The revised edition is also dedicated to American filmmaker, mentor, and friend, Phil Solomon.

Hunter (2015) - Short Film

It is nightfall. A hunter lurks in the darkness, wandering further towards the impenetrable.

Do the meanings lie in the stream, in the mountains, the stars, or in the death of things?

Half Moon (2020) - Short Film

A short film by Scott Barley, originally for Tadhg O’Sullivan’s feature essay film, ‘To the Moon’ (2020). Shot on iPhone Xs with various rephotographing techniques, as well as superimposed drawings and paintings by Scott Barley.

A Ladder (2025) - Short Film

Secret ladder.
Borne from firmament.
Stone, atonal waters.
Chorus of silent hands.
A vanishing act.
Night is burning.
Night is burning white.
Flesh, a white fire.
Avian. Given.
Secret ladder.
Mirror, become mirror.
